Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. He would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil did not permit the adverse feedback from others annihilate his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors on the planet.
He began playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated a number of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is learning every single day and is quite abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes errors every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a normal basis.
