Gus Hansen experienced a marvelous year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the closing game in three of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You might recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. He raked in a large pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors around the world. While betting on net poker, another side of Hansen has emerged. He frequently participates in the 200/400 No Limit max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen usually buys in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very weak. He waits for a decent hand and then goes all in. I accept that Gus is a great poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has no reason to settle at the game with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the min takes a majority of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be 1 of the greatest poker players in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I think television can alter our perception of the real world sometimes. The best players anywhere in the world may be guys you have never heard about.
