Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players often get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems difficult initially, after a few hands you will be able to get the base nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
