Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker player on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught him penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he could about the game. He routinely told his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t let the detrimental comments from others destroy his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
He started competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an undying passion for poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a normal basis.
