Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only one to make it to the closing poker table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a huge pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the strongest enthusiasts around the world. While gambling on net poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He often competes in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Gus generally buys-in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very poorly. He waits patiently for a good hand and then goes all-in. I accept that Hansen is a great poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has no reason to sit at the table with the min buy in.
Playing for the minimum takes most of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the full amt.. I think tv can alter our perception of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world might just be players you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be seen participating in web poker on Full Tilt. He generally participates in big stakes Omaha and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his talents in cash games?
