Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi low.
