Gus Hansen enjoyed a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only gambler to achieve final poker table in three of the events. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the largest pots in high stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a huge pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the best gamblers anywhere in the world. While wagering on web poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly participates in the 200/400 No Limit max buy in of $40, 000. Hansen more often than not buys in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He waits for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I know Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the regular players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to settle at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Buying in for the min takes a majority of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be 1 of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the full dollar value. I think television can alter our perception of the real world sometimes. The best players in the world may be guys you have never heard of before. Gus can be seen competing in web poker on Full Tilt. He commonly participates in big stakes omaha/8 and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he back up his talents in cash rounds?
