Gus Hansen had an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the closing game in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a large pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the greatest enthusiasts around the world. While gambling on online poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 No Limit max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen more often than not buys in for the min of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but certainly not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is flat broke, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the min buy-in.
Playing for the min takes a majority of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Hansen is supposed to be one of the best players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the full amount. I believe television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest players in the world might just be guys you have never heard of before. Gus can be found wagering on web poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes Omaha and hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his abilities in money games?
