Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants often get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of wagering choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
